I prefer the definite article. Most people have only one past, unless you believe in reincarnation.

I know him from the distant past.

I supposed it meant something like, "I knew him from a former life, my years with the CIA." It is up to the OP to ask whether the sense is the one he's looking for. A sentence can often be interpreted in many ways.
