I kinda got "that" impression.

A: I just wanted you to know that he didn't come with us.

B: Yeah, I know. I kinda got that impression.

I was wondering if it was 'the impression' instead of 'that impression', would the meaning have change.

Not really. In context, "the" could only mean the same as "that" (i.e., the impression that he didn't come).

"That" is better, and would be the usual way of saying this.
