I hurt my finger yesterday. Actually, It was/ is my thumb

I saw a cartoon strip in a newspaper. Charlie Brown says to Snoopy, " I had my finger cut opening a can of dog food,
and it hurt all last night. Besides that, it was not a finger. It was my thumb!"

Charlie Brown cut his finger yesterday, and it hurt all last night. Today his finger is still hurt and wrapped. Since his finger
is still hurt, I wonder why he says "it was not a finger. It was my thumb" ? Shouldn't he say " it is my thumb" ?

Thank you very much for your reply. I wonder if it is also right for Charlie Brown to say"it is not a finger. It is my thumb" ?

Possibly, but not so likely—he is probably still thinking of the cut yesterday.
