Speech & Pronunciation

I hoped to... [I hopt to, I hope to]

Hi, the problem is basically this:
in a past tense, d after an unvoiced sound is a t. But what if that psat tense is followed by another t sound? I can't pronounce I hope to and I hoped to differently (and I can't hear the difference either).

Any opinions? Thank you Emotion: smile

I would pronounce hope to and hoped to exactly the same, with one "t" sound.

I think there might be a difference in my speech. In "hoped to" the "t" is held - there's a slight pause before the release of the "t" in "to". But in "hope to" there is no such pause.

Thank you.
Yes, I think there's that slight difference too, but it's very slight anyway. And that applies to my other examples too. But apart from that, I think there are no other sounds in between, that is, the pairs above are basically the same (love that/ loved that, hope the/ hoped the, ...). That's unbelievable!

I think that normally the context will make it clear whether we mean the past or present tense. If necessary we can stress the verb.

Same in my pronunciation. I "sense" the double T even though I barely hear it.
"hoped to" Unreleased T followed by slightly aspirated T.
"hope to" One aspirated T.
