I hope we don't let them off with ...

My royals are Queen Elizabeth and her mob. ... One day, though, I predict we'll want to get rid of the whole institution and just have a proper democracy. On that day, I hope we don't let them off with a couple of abdications.

In the last sentence in the passage above, what does the author mean? Does s/he mean, "On that day, let us get rid of the entire royal family and not be generous to them even if some of them abdicate."?
