I hope or I don't hope

Dear teachers,

I want to know which one is more relevant, or sounds natural when talking about someone who has a bad flu.



1) I hope he won’t get worse.

2) I don’t hope he will get worse.

Only 1 is normal and natural. The second one could be uttered only in the extremely rare instance in which you might be trying to exonerate yourself from an accusation that you are wishing him harm. CJ
