I heard Ken

I heard Ken wasn't married, so that woman ______ have been his wife.

(A) shouldn't
(B) mightn't
(C) couldn't
(D) won't

I think its A but getting confused with C.

if C then can you please help with why?

If Ken is not married, then it's is not that someone suggests or recommends that that woman be someone other than his wife. It's impossible for her to be his wife. It could not be so.

If Ken is not married, then it's is not that someone suggests or recommends that that woman be someone other than his wife. It's impossible for her to be his wife. It could not be so. She couldn't be his wife.
