'I', he said, 'am disgusted with her.'

In BrE, would you place the comma inside or outside of the introductory quotes ('I' and 'That') as I've done below?

'I', he said, 'am disgusted with her.'

'That', he said, 'is deplorable.'

Thank you.

Regards,

Seth

I was taught that in BrE, single quotation marks or double quotation marks may be used, but in AmE double quotation marks are obligatory.

The following link says the same thing.

I was taught double for speech, single for quoted text and nested quotes, but that was a long time ago (50 years!). If Seth is studying for an exam obviously he should use what his text books and teachers say. I don't know how I feel about the way I have always done it now being regarded as the 'American Way'. Gulp! Anyway, apologies if I have slighted you, it seems you are correct.

No, Vic, I didn't feel slighted. Thanks for the explanation. It shows that English is evolving. What was correct long ago is not so nowadays.
