Recently Meningitis is spreading across West Africa. It is a threat every year across 21 African countries.
Now, scientists find they can predict and prepare for this disease or other diseases. How? They rely on the data got by satellites.
Every year, dust storms blow across the Sahel area of Africa. And every year meningitis crosses the Sahel after the storms. A atmospheric scientist in NASA told us these. So, if we monitor the dust storm in this area, when the dust storm comes, then we will know that the disease meningitis will come after it and do some preparations for it.
Another scientist Nita Bharti in Penny State University also find a method to predict the spread of measles across. She said that the changes in brightness were telling us something about increasing and decreasing human aggregation, and that’s very likely driving the transmission of measles.
Rita Colwell is in the University of Maryland. Her group fond that it can predict cases of the deadly disease cholera in Bangladesh by using satellite information about conditions in the Bay of Bengal.
In summary, the satellite is becoming a really powerful public health tool. We can predict diseases from the information got from it. We hope more and more groups can enrol in the research about how to predict disease from the information got by satellites in order to reduce our human’s possibility getting diseases.
