I have two left feet

A: you are a great dancer.
B:
(a) I took lessons as a child.
(b) I have two left feet.

the correct answer is (a) but (b) also sounds ok to me...
can I interpret (b) as "I am not really good at dancing" ??

That may be because you are adding things mentally that aren't really written there.
-- You're a great dancer.
-- Not really. Sometimes it seems that I have two left feet.
Just I have two left feet without any "padding words" is not an appropriate comment.

Hi,
I agree that A is certainly the expected answer, but I know B is OK, because I often have this kind of conversation with people that I dance with. Usually, they are just being modest.

I also agree that the remarks as written are a bit terse, and would often receive a little padding.
