I have no idea what this metaphor means

What does it mean to say that somebody's a cherry picker of something????

As in this sentence :"Though he's known as an obsessive reporter and a science nerd, he's been called a dangerous cherry picker of data-someone who seaeches through decades of studies to weave together the bits he likes"?

He picked the data that supported his theories/beliefs, which is an intimidating gesture to most others?

The article's actually about how to fight obesity, and before the quoted sentence, it talks about the results of the researches to date that have been wrong.
