I have ever met vs I ever met

I was watching an American tv show yesterday and the next sentence came by: " you are the best thing that ever happened to me". I immediately asked my self if it shouldn't be: " that has ever happened to me". I believe I read somewhere that the American grammar can be different at times. Is this true?

Yes, that's true. AmE often uses simple past where BrE uses present perfect. This is particularly noticeable with the adverbs 'ever' and 'already'.
