I have been fascinated with this country since + Past Simple or Past Perfect?

Hello,

I'd like to ask you all whether we should say:
"I have been fascinated with this country since I went on holidays to Barcelona when I was 14 (...)."

or

"I have been fascinated with this country since I had gone on holidays to Barcelona when I was 14 (...)."

I'd go for the first option (Past Simple) since we've got a specific point in time (14 years ago) and the reference to the present (Present Perfect). Am I right or not?

Thanks in advance!

I agree that sentence one sounds more natural. I would also add, from a British English perspective, that the word 'holidays' doesn't need to be in the plural.
