I have an question

What is the correct procedure when saying or writing something like, "We went to a hotel."?

Is it as above or is it, "We went to an hotel."?

I have seen that odd bit (an) used when the word hotel is used, is it the same for all words that begin with "H"?

Any other general rules regarding this?

I must've been asleep at school the day we learnt this.

Hotel is one of several words that have an unstressed but pronounced initial /h/ ( Hawaii, Havana, hallucination ). As for speaking, say a hotel or an hotel -- whichever is easier for you. As for writing, a hotel -- the standard a before a consonant sound-- is far and away the most common.
