I have a problem with improvingmy writing skill? plz help.

hi everyone,

I have a problem with improving my writing skill. For other skills of communication, i think i am doing great job. I took the TOEFL test and my score is 98 . My level of speaking , reading and listening is reported as high but for writing , it was fair. I am so determined to improve myself and it tried to do that by my own however, everytime i start writing i get frustrated because i feel that i can express myself the way i want, and i tend to use very simple structure and simple words. I wish i can hire a tutor to guide me but i can not afford that. The only way i do is reading , i read a lot and i know many vocalubalies yet i use only few of them. Please , tell or give some strategies by which i can improve my writing skill within this year so, i can score 100 or above in the TOEFL test . I need to improve my writing to be qualified for writing a good Ma thesis, too.

Purdue University has a writing lab and lists a lot of resources. Not all of the links are current, though. And some probably are not what you are looking for.

Congratulations on your test score.

i tend to use very simple structure and simple words. I think this is good. Sometimes ESL students get the idea that long, complicated sentences are better than short, simple sentences! This isn't necessarily true, and it can contribute to confusion and mistakes. Master the simpler sentences first. Then you willbe able to go on to writing more complicated sentences. (By the way, I don't think that the sentences in your post are particularly simple.)

You might want to post some of your writing on this forum and ask someone to edit what you wrote. And you can search this site for posts about writing. This is a good place to start.

One more suggestion: capitalize "I", even though this is on-line.

Thank you Nef for your quick and encourging response , for the helpful links and for the suggestions.

you are right about the simple structure , however , I am Ma student of Linguistics that why I am worried about my writing level. I need to be a good writer in order to be able to write a good thesis. I scored 21\ 30 in TOEFL Test and I do not think that this score is good for MA student or let just me say I am not sure. The problem with me is that there would always grammatical mistakes or vague,incorrect uses of words that may make the writing difficult to understand.Besides, I am not good with writing skills such as outlining, brainstorming ..etc. Writing for me is a nightmare

You might want to do a search for "TOEFL" on this website. A lot of people have written about this test.
