I have a doubt regarding direct object in this clause

'He insisted on finishing the work himself.'

My gut feeling is saying there's no direct object in this clause, but I could be wrong. Can you guys help me out?

' There are two verbs here — 'insisted' and 'finishing'. This creates one clause inside another. The first verb is followed by a prepositional phrase, not a direct object.
