I have a doubt

which is the correct way to say: I do exercise or I exercise.

please, if someone can help me to clarify this because I am studying english as a second tongue and my teacher told me that the correct way is I exercise, but I have found in some books that both of them are correct.
I'll be very grateful, thank you much.
