I have a comma question.

Okay, I am having a problem with one sentence in my reflection paper. I am not sure about my comma usage. I have heard and recently been taught that in a listing sentance that I do not need a comma in front of the last "and" but when I asked a friend if my sentence looked right, she told me I needed a comma there. I just want to make sure I am writing this correctly. My sentence is:

I was able to see the cephalocaudle principle as some of the infants we’re only able to control their trunk but not their legs, others being able to control their trunk and legs but not their feet and finally the other children being able to control all three.

BrE generally uses the comma, while AmE generally omits it, but you have several other problems: I was able to observe the cephalocaudal principle : some of the infants were able to control their trunk but not their legs or feet, others wer e able to control their trunk and legs but not their feet , and yet others were unable to control any of these.
