I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM QUESTION HELP PLEASE

DEAR SIR, I HAVE TWO SENTENCES ABOUT GENERIC NOUNS.IM NOT SURE WHAT TO PUT TO BLANKS......................1-many species are endangered like_wolves and_tigers(THE or ZERO ARTICLE)..................2-many species are endangered like _wolf and _tiger(THE or ZERO ARTICLE or A).........some explanation pleaseeeeeeee

Top answer

I'd like to use no article in the second sentence. Many species are endangered like wolf and tiger. Because it sounds the same pattern to me as "These names are only for girls like Lily and Helen" See also: a species of antelope (no article) (But sadly, it seems that I have been misusing articles all the time

Maple, I don't think the analogy you're offering is a good one - "Lily" and "Helen" are proper nouns, unlike "wolf" and "tiger".

Yes, Lily and Helen are proper nouns. So the example sentence is not good.

What I really want to say is "wolf" and "tiger" are the names of the things just under the category of species.

Well, I'm neither a teacher nor a native speaker, but in my opinion, the answers are as follows:

Many species are endangered like wolves and tigers.
Many species are endangered like the wolf and the tiger.

Although I'd be inclined to change the word order: Many species, like wolves and tigers / the wolf and the tiger, are endangered.
It seems to me that the "wolves and t

Hi, these are what we often read.

I'm wondering is there any special "rule" when the subject is species.

You correctly pointed out that there is no article before "antelope" in "a species of antelope". But I wouldn't say this is something specific to the word "species".

Compare:

This kind of envelope is very hard to open.

Some makes of car are extremely expensive.

These types of report tend to be lengthy and boring.

Hello, Maple,

I must admit I don't know what a "measure word" is.

As for the second question, I THINK that you can use either. I'd say that the first version is more common. But this would really require intervention by a native speaker - I don't want to transmit any mistakes I may make. Perhaps a new thread specifically on this?

Best wishes.
