I hadn't seen...

I visited a few friends and did a little sightseeing. On the evening of the eighteenth, I ate a late dinner with some friends that I hadn't seen in several years.
I really don't why they said "I hadn't seen..."
Why didn't they use "present perfect"

1. The past time you ate dinner.
2. Another past time that is even earlier. It past relative to the time you ate dinner.
