I hadn't gotten very far on my tree

Hi..! I have a question again..

Then here's what happened. Naturally, all this took a lot of time, and I hadn't gotten very far on my tree, so I was fretting and stamping out the fire when I stopped with my foot in the air.

I don't get what this situation is. It seems he was climbing up on a tree, and there was some fire under him.. and he was scared that fire may burn something.. , but it doesn't really make sense.
