I had/I've had

Will you please explain what the difference is between I and I've here?

Wife: It's also been hard for me.

Husband: Yeah? How so?

Wife: I/I've had a lot to deal with in your absence.

The wife is mainly referring to that she's been alone with their kids while the husband was away. Is deal with a natural choice when referring to that or would choose something else like take care of?
