I had reviewed the number before writing to you

Hello my friends!

I've always thought that the past perfect is used in a narrative where the past is described and you need to backtrack to an earlier event. But today I was asking an English-speaking colleague if he had reviewed some numbers and this is what I got in reply:

"Hello Mario!
I had reviewed the numbers before sending them to you."

Is it normal to start sentences or letters with the past perfect? Or it doesn't matter, because the point is that there are two points in the past for my colleague and one of them precedes the other so the use of the past perfect is justified?

Thank you for your help and suggestions.
