I HAD rather believe all ....

"I HAD rather believe all the fables in the Legend, and the Talmud, and the Alcoran, than that this universal frame is without a mind."

These words are from the essay ' Of Atheism' written by Francis Bacon.

What does he mean by saying 'I HAD rather believe..'?
