I had never had problems with academics before.

Hi all

I am having problems with past perfect tense. This is a recurrent problem for me. Am I correct to use the past perfect here because I am talking about a problem-free time that occurred before this current phase of time?

I have been struggling with university. This is unexpected because I had never had problems with academics before.

Thank you.
