I had him wait/ waiting outside.

Hi teachers!

I wonder whether the sentences are all grammatical and used interchangeably.

1. I had him wait outside.

2. I had him waiting outside.

3. I had the car wait outside.

4. I had the car waiting outside.

5. I had the clock work.

6. I had the clock working.

Many thanks in advance.

1. This is okay. The meaning is: "I told him to wait outside."

2. This is okay. The meaning is: "While I was inside doing something, he was waiting outside during the duration of what I was doing it." Note: the meaning of 2 is not the same as 1. There is nothing in 1 about a duration of an action.

3. This is similar to 1. You told the driver of the car to wait outside.
