I had expected [+ inf/perf.inf/that clause]

Hi all,

From an exercise in our textbook, here's a sentence that caused some controversy in my class.

TASK: Find and correct the errors in the following sentences: (I'm posting only one of these, the one that caused disagreement)
...
I had expected having heard from the selection committee by now.

...

Three answers were put forward:

1. I had expected to hear from the selection committee by now.
2. I had expected to have heard from the selection committee by now.
3. I had expected that I would have heard from the selection committee by now.

Could you please comment on these (or, if you're not satisfied with any, add your own)?
I have my opinion on the above three, but would like not to influence anybody. Emotion: smile

Thank you!

  • " "I expected to hear from the selection committee by now" "I expected to have heard from the committee by now" (but I am not sure about this one, and I wouldn't like it anyway, I guess).
  • And now that I have written mine, I realize they are almost the same as yours, but I didn't use the past perfect, LOL.

I mean, I expected to have heard by now.I expected I would have heard by now.
I had expected to have heard by then.
The pst perfect of "had expected" means that something should have happened since that past point in time of my expectations.

I was disappointed when I opened my mail on Monday, because I had expected to have heard by then. (Fortunately, my waiting came to an end on

Hmm, sorry, I must have been dumb (more than usual), because I thought I head read "by NOW" in your last reply. Now I have seen that it was actually clear you meant there was a problem with the past perfect and you agreed with me, so... sorry, LOL. Anyway, thanks.
