I had a relative come through here.

I found out the following sentence from a movie.

"A: I had a relative come through here"

In this scene, 'A' was talking about her ancestor who immigrated into america through some

port.

but I can't understand why 'come' is used in the original form.

I thought " I had a relative coming through here" or " I had a relative who came through

here" is more acceptable.

could anyone expalain this to me?

thanks in advance.

Many verb forms are sometimes used rather vaguely - and you might even say incorrectly. Your sentence may be cosidered wrong by some, correct by others. Clearly, this usage comes from to have somebody do something : I ' ll have him fix my car .

  • In other words, you don't fix your car yourself but somebody else will fix it for you on your request.
