I guess so

Hello,

If I ask somesone not to do something if it is okay for him?

He said, "I guess so".

What does it mean exactly? It seems to me "I guess so"is not very willing to commit but he has to accept the request. Correct?

Thanks!

You're nearly right. He does not have to do it, but reluctantly agrees to do so.

Much depends on the way the request is worded.

eg

Tom: Please don't walk on the grass.

Jim: OK. (Here, "I guess so' is wrong.)

eg

Anne: Can you please stay off the grass?

Beth: OK or I guess so
