My Trip To The Learning Centre
Being a college student is tough, especially for a student like me whose first language is not English. Unlike Math, I find English is very hard to learn. Therefore, I look for more help by visiting the Kwantlen's Learning Centre. It is my first time visiting the Learning Centre. While I wait for a peer coach, I spend the time exploring the place because I know that it is a good place for a student like me who needs extra help. Even though the Learning centre is small. There are many details on the ceiling, window and the two sides that surround the room
My overall impression of the Learning Centre is the well-structure of the ceiling. The ceiling is made out of concrete. It is about 18" high and it has many florence lights for energy efficient. Beside to bright the place, the lights are used as covers to hide all the ceiling heaters and sprinkler, and I think it is a neat design. Because the building is concrete and has many heaters, it is really warm in the winter. When I see that there is nothing left to jot down and I realize that it is strange to keep looking at the ceiling, I turn on my left to look for something new.
On my left is a bookshelf and a counter and they divide the room. It makes the room feel small and cozy. The shelf has many books. Most of them are English writing books and the rest are Psychology books. That makes me think that most of the students who visiting the Learning Centre for help are English students. There are two persons working at the counter. A man and a women. They seem relaxed and get along really well because they like to talk to each other. However, most of their conversation relate to their work. The man seems energetic because he keeps walking around and he does everything fast, where as the women sits in one place. They both wear sweaters but the man is wearing a brighter color sweater. Each of them has a desktop computer and they spend most of their time working with them. they have to share a wire-telephone. There are a lot of paper on their desk with different colors. While I look on my left, there are two students in front of me get my attention because they share their experiences of how to improve English more effective.
In front of me are students, computers, chairs, tables and removable walls. There are two round tables right in front of me with nine chairs. Except the two chairs are used by two students, the other 11 chairs are out-of-place. It looks like that the people who were using them were in a hurry when they left and forgot to put them back where they belonged. A student who wears a pair of glasses with the black frame says that his English improves dramatically while he works as an sale agent in a Mall, and the other student says that his English is better when he is dating with an English-speaking girl friend. There are three persons using computers sitting further along the removable walls. They seem to know each other. One of them looks like a peer coach because he gives feedbacks for the other person. It looks like they discuss something relate to computer. There are three removable walls use to separate the room from the main hallway. While I concentrate on their conversation, I realize that there is a reflection of me in the glass on the right so I turn to the right and look at it.
There are empty rooms, a plant and an empty garbage can on my right. Each of the three empty rooms has a glass window and my reflection is in the centre room's. All three rooms are empty and dark. The one in the center is a prayer room. it has a small sign hanging above the door. The doors of the three rooms are in bright wood color. The doors' knobs are made out of chrome. They look really modern. There is a small empty garbage can in the corner. I love plants and there is a big jade plant placing in front of the center room It has big green leaves and it is placed in a huge orange pot. The plant is about 6' tall and it has a very nice shape. While I look at it, I feel something like a ray of sun behind my back, I turn around and see a big glass window.
Behind me is a big floor-to-ceiling glass window. It is about 18' high and 15' wide. The window makes me feel open. The window is very nice and clean because it has no dust or finger prints. Which makes me think the janitor is doing a good job of keeping this place organize. From the inside, I can see the side-walk which leads to the parking lot. I also see another Kwantlen's building from the Learning Centre. Sitting at the Learning Centre, sometimes I smell perfume and Tim Horton's coffee. Because the Learning Centre is right beside the hall way and the computer lab, sometimes I get distracted when I hear students laughing, whispering, keyboard typing and phone ringing.
I am glad that I use my spare time effectively to observer everything in the Learning Centre. Next time when I visit the Learning Centre, I know that the ceiling meets the safety standard. I feel safe to see the ceiling is made out of concrete and it has a lot of sprinklers in case of fire.I also know that there are many English books on the shelf on my left so I can borrow them if I need. In addition, there are rooms on my right for me to use if I need some quiet study time. Finally, there is a big glass window behind me so I can have some tanning while studying in the summer.
I am very happy that I invest my time to observe the Learning Centre because I know that this place will help me a lot for my education in the future.
