I got difficult sentence!

Can any one show me the structure (and the meaning) of this sentence:
"The prototrophic character, putatively due to transformation, was poorly transmitted through crosses TUM 1973), behavior now attributable to RIP but then a cause for skepticism".
I'm really crazy when I'm finding what the phrase: "behavior now attributable to RIP but then a cause for skepticism" is used for ?

When you read something in a scientific research article, the sentence will be full of acronyms and special jargon particular to the special field of study. That makes it difficult to understand, especially for laypeople. None of us, I daresay, are experts in genetics.
