I found these in "The Scarlet letter"

I found these in "The Scarlet letter":
1) Chapter 12:

Pearl mumbled something into his ear, that sounded, indeed, like human language, but was only such gibberish as children may be heard amusing themselves with, by the hour together
2) Chapter 13:
A species of general regard has ultimately grown up in reference to Hester Prynne

I don't understand the words in bold. So please help
