You're talking to someone and then you suddenly say:
Oh, I forgot to mention I was/am a student. (I'm a student now and I forgot to mention that a few minutes ago when I was, say, introducing myself or something). Would both be correct? Also, how does this work with actions?
I forgot to mention (when I was speaking just now) that I saw him a few hours ago. I'd use the past simple because "a few hours ago" is
still a few hours ago, if you know what I mean. I would most definitely not use the past perfect here.
or
I forgot to mention (just now) that I have never seen that movie. I'd use the present perfect here because I still haven't seen it, but to be honest, I don't have an issue using the past perfect either, which is not the case with my previous example. But if I say: "A few days ago, I was talking to him and I mentioned I had never seen that movie before", the past perfect sounds very natural and I would not use the present perfect. I would be extremely thankful if somebody could analyze all of my examples and tell me if I'm right. Thank you kindly, and I'm sorry if it's a bother.
