If you see any mistakes in the following sentence, can you please correct me?
I felt bad about breaking up with him because we had been together more than 2 years.
I felt bad about leaving him because he had been a great guy until he started drinking 2 years ago.

They are both OK. (I don't think a native would use past perfect in the 2nd, though.)
