I enjoyed the most

Hi,

could you please help me?

Someone wrote: "The thing that I enjoyed the most was to serve the ACDC band".

I am doubtful about this sentence.

a) instead of writing "the thing" I would have written "What I enjoyed...". But is "the thing" incorrect?

b) Could I omit "the" before most?

Thank you!
