I don't understand this paragraph please tell me what it's saying.....

'Unlike most of her friends, as a teenager Kadosh opted for national service in the army - frowned upon for Orthodox Jewish girls.'

'frowned upon for....' especially baffles me. Thank you ^^

Better expressed as "frowned upon BY....

However, if 'by' is used, be careful about what follows 'by', because I don't have the impression that the meaning is 'frowned upon by Orthodox Jewish girls. Rather, the intended meaning seems to me to be that it is orthodox tradition that frowns upon Orthodox Jewish girls enlisting in the army.

Yes, I'd agree, i.e.

'...something which, for Orthodox Jewish girls, is frowned upon.'

Some of the Orthodox Jewish girls may be frowning; but they're a subset of the Greater Frown.
