i don't understand the difference between an Engineer and a mechanic.would you explain me it?

i amn't a native speaker. of course i haven't lived in nation using english.
so i don't know them well. pls tell me it in detail showing examples.

i found them from eng-eng dictionary below. though i read , i still don't know ??.

An engineer is a person who repairs mechanical or electrical devices.

A mechanic is someone whose job is to repair and maintain machines and engines, especially car engines.

Very generally speaking, an engineer holds a much higher position, requiring university education.

eg An automotive engineer can design and supervise the building of a new kind of car, but a mechanic con only repair and maintain it.
