I don't know why i find psychology so hard. HELP!!!

What is psychology?

Researcher Wilhelm Wundt is considered the father of psychology establishing the first psychology laboratory in 1879 Germany. He was pursuing the knowledge to understand and explain our mind, emotion and actions By the Early 19th century there were many scientists. Each scientist work has been very instrumental in human behavior and cognitive process; however, there work was the center of debates and criticized. “This did not stop physiologists from making progress in answering questions about the nature of psychological processes that philosophers were having difficulty answering”. (Sdorow, Rickabaugh, Betz. 2015, p.3).

Psychology has broadened into avenues which focuses on knowledge. It is a discipline that studies both the human behavior and cognitive process; In short, seeks to provide explanation and understanding pertaining to thought, emotion and behavior. Nevertheless, the depth of the human mind is truly limitless from conception till death. “Like any other science psychology has evolved over time,” (Sdorow, Rickabaugh & Betz. 2015, p.2) .

Discuss how philosophy and physiology are related to psychology;

Philosophy and physiology relationship to psychology is displayed through the work of Plato, nativism and rationalism theories, Aristotle’s, emphasis on structure and function, and physiological theories of Helmholtz, (Sdorow, Rickabaugh, Betz. 2015, p.3-5). which these scientists work crossed paths, as the ‘NEED and TRUTH’ of science and has no greater difference from Psychology.

What are the major perspectives in psychology?

The premise behind Psychology, is how we feel, think, all associated with bodily events. The major perspectives of Psychology are humanistic-how individuals naturally grow, develop and be in control of their own lives and behavior, cognitive- how the mind organizes perceptions and processes information, biopsychological- the study of the brain, the hormonal system and effects of heredity on psychological functions, and sociocultural- human behavior in sociocultural perspective. (Sdorow, Rickabaugh, Betz. 2015, p.12-17)

What is the difference between applied and basic psychology?

The difference between applied and basic psychology is what they are used for. For example Maslow, theory what motivates people natural tendency of self-actualization as a fellow scientists Rogers echoed his theory. (Sdorow, Rickabaugh, Betz. 2015, p.5-11).

Is there a difference between psychologists and psychiatrists?

In Psychology, there are fields of specializations such as psychologists and psychiatrist, both study the brain, emotions, feelings and thoughts. However, the major difference is education requirements. (Sdorow, Rickabaugh, Betz. 2015). For example, A psychologist is not able to write prescription, but may recommend a patient to be seen by a psychiatrist to receive medications.

Should people accept media reports as strong evidence for scientific claims?

The tabloids have a mass following because they present facts that on basis cannot be question. However, science is facts, but we have our own mind and our own reality that affect our thought process and what we choose to believe or accept. Goldacre said, “science is portrayed as groundless, incomprehensible, didactic truth statements from scientists, who themselves are socially powerful, arbitrary, unelected authority figures. And ultimately, and most ridiculously, science is too hard to understand for the public and therefore all stories involving science must be dumbed down”. What are sources of knowledge used in psychology?

Per science sources of knowledge such as common sense, is based on statements or our own reasoning about things and observations from our personal experiences. For example, watch your fingers while cutting that fruit and don’t turn without using your signal.

What are the goals of psychological research?

The goals of psychological research are using scientific method for rigorous testing to understand and provide reasoning for our behavior, using hypothesis, prediction, explanation and application for the study. “Because psychologists are skeptical about claims not supported by research findings, they employ the scientific method, as their means of gaining knowledge”. (Sdorow, Rickabaugh, Betz. 2015, p.29). The knowledge created by this research is intended to benefit people directly or eventually.

What are the methods of psychological research?

The methods of psychology are based on the data collected. Using scientific method, we break down the variables of what is the descriptive research, the correlational research and experimental research which “pursues the goals of control and explanation,” (Sdorow, Rickabaugh, Betz. 2015, p.32).
