I don't know which tense to use

The Assyrians were living/ lived/ had lived/ had been living there long before the Romans came and took their lands.

Technically, they are all grammatically correct, but some are better than others. Here's how I rank them, from best to worst.

They had been living there ...
They had lived there ...
They lived there ...
They were living there ...

(I am really not happy with the last two.)
