I don't know what does it mean?

Hi,

{We are no more free agents than the queen of clubs when she victoriously takes prisoner the knave of hearts.}

Colud any native speaker tell me that meaning?

Thank you for your assistance in advance.

I suppose it means that the 2 playing cards cannot change their values, so that the queen always beats the knave (jack); they cannot change (they are not free agents). However, since the sentence specifies the two suits clubs and hearts, perhaps this is a reference to some particular computer or on-line game?

Hi,

it is Famous Quotes about Destiny by Lady Mary Wortley Montagu

Then those particular cards may refer to an old 17th or 18th century British card game. The meaning is, I suspect, as I have already suggested.
