I don't know what did I just watch.

Hello,

I have a question that's been bothering me for a bit.

Is "I don't know what did I just watch" grammatically correct?

I know that "I don't know what I just watched" is an alternative but I'm curious as to why isn't the first sentence correct (or that's what I've been told).

I need a mini-lesson if possible, thanks.

What did I just watch?

Used as a dependent clause, there is no inversion but indirect questions can use the emphatic form with the auxiliary "do."
