I don't know if you will agree

"I don't know if anyone agrees with me , but I think this is a suicide mission."

"I don't know if anyone else had the same thought , but I think this is a suicide mission."

Which of the above two sentences expresses the idea better ?

What is the meaning of "but" in these sentences ? Nevertheless ? Is "but" a conjunction in these sentences ?

In a nut shell, both sentences have about the same meaning from my point of view. "But" is not required. In fact, I think it should be omitted in my opinion.
