I don't know him/her well

If I have a nodding acquaintance with somebody, what also can I say to express the same meaning?

Are these possible?

1.I don't know him/her well
2.I'm not familiar with him/her (I've consulted dictiionaries and this does not seem OK)

#1 is fine as a synonymous utterance. The dictionary is right; #2 is odd. You could do this, however: I am not familiar with his writings.
