I don't know gold dust from diarrhea.

well, I'm not sure if it's an idiom.

I'm watching "In cold blood" and there is phrase "I don't know gold dust from diarrhea" and after that they are talking about "prospecting gold".

Does the phrase mean "I cannot tell gold dust from diarrhea" or something else?

Thanks in advance!
