hi guys,I always hear native people say "I don'nt give a shit" which means I don't care (I guess). my Q is can I use this phrase at school, or with my parents or not?thank you guys.yours with love

not something polite, and the replacement for *** is important, it can be pretty vulgar and to be avoided

it basically means that the opinion of others is of no value to you, which of course isn't polite

If you feel the urge to say "I don't care" but you don't want to be vulgar, you can say "I don't give a hoot" or "I don't give a darn" as mild replacements.

My personal favoriate is "I don't give a flying fish" where "fish" replaces a far more vulgar word than "d**n" - but THAT (even with the fish variation) you should not use with those in authority.

But you don't use it to say simply "I don't care" - Where do you want to do to dinner? I don't give a d**n. (incorrect use, unless you're angry about something.)

You use it to say what you don't care about:

I don't give a d**n about your lunch plans, I need you to stay here and finish this report before you leave.

I don't give a hoot what others say about it, I really liked that movie.

I don't give a darn about what you think, *I* think that Mary is a nice girl.
