I don't get this composition, please!

So here i am, reading my favorite blog when i encounter these two sentences, one coming after the other and me with no clue! please help.

"I would have preferred being asked if it hurt. You know, when I fell from heaven"

In below you can see them with some other sentences accompanying them.
"CBCC had been asked if he knew me. He kindly said, yes, of course he did. We were brothers, perhaps he should talk to me. So the guy did just that. I guess he needed an ice breaker. Personally, I would have preferred being asked if it hurt. You know, when I fell from heaven"

Hi, The gay guy asked me if I were Irish. That was his way of starting a conversation so that he could make sexual advances to me. I would have preferred him to ask me if it hurt when I fell from heaven.

The gay guy asked me if I were Irish. That was his way of starting a conversation so that he could make sexual advances to me.
