I do not understand the role of "That" in the sentences below ? some English teacher says that it is wrong some says it has been used instead of "where", I am totally confused

This is the village that I returned to.
This place is situated in the quietest, greatest residential areas of the ancient, and for the most part over populated city of Brhampr (name of a place), that the wedding was taking place.
After opening up fairly decently on Friday, the movie picked up at the 1500 odd screens that it was released in as weekend set in.
