There's nothing wrong with this.
However, I'm not completely sue what you mean by 'taking everything too far'. Can you say it another way?

I would have written ''she had been taking...''. has been denotes present aspect of something. When I talked to Jane perhaps she took things too serio

Hi,
The whole matter sounds pretty current to me, pretty close to the present, so that Jane is unlikely to have changed her habits.

If you think otherwise, eg if the whole matter being discussed relates to something 30 years ago, then your suggestion has merit.
