Simple past: An action in the past at a definite point in time. Yesterday I went out for lunch.
Past perfect: An action in the past, and before another action in the past. Yesterday I wanted (simple past) to go out to lunch, but I had forgotten (past perfect - further in the past) my wallet at home so I couldn't.

Try to think of a few yourself.
