I did not recognize her because it had been a long time since we parted

"I did not recognize her because it had been a long time since we parted"

"I didn't recognize her because it had been a long time since we HAD parted?"

It seems to me that the second option would be much more appropriate in terms of the time line. Could anybody tell me the right option? Many thanks.

cybernik812 "I did not recognize her because it had been a long time since we parted" The past perfect is not necessary because the sequence of events is clear. It is not wrong, but most native speakers would use the sentence quoted above. It just sounds nicer.
